Dangerous Roads for Pedestrians in the Tri-State Area

By Joseph Tacopina Published April 23, 2013

Crossing the street can be very dangerous, even when taking care to look both ways. Because of location and traffic patterns, there are some roads that are more dangerous than others for pedestrians. Which roads in the tri-state area are most dangerous for pedestrians?

For the fifth consecutive year, The Tri-State Transportation Campaign says that the most dangerous road for pedestrians in the tri-state area is the Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County, New York. The group does point out that some improvements are being made to make the road safer for pedestrians.

The rankings by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign were based on the number of pedestrian fatalities from 2009 to 2011. The rest of the top 10? Here’s how it shaped up in the tri-state area:

  • Broadway in Manhattan, New York
  • Jericho Turnpike in Suffolk County, New York;
  • Sunrise Highway in Nassau County, New York
  • State Route 110 (New York Avenue, Broadhollow Road, and Broadway) in Suffolk County, New York
  • Blackhorse Pike in Atlantic County, New Jersey
  • Burlington Pike in Burlington County, New Jersey
  • Route 1 in Middlesex County, New Jersey
  • State Route 27 (Sunrise Highway, Montauk Point State Highway and County Route 39) in Suffolk County, New York
  • White Horse Pike in Camden County, New Jersey
  • Route 9 in Middlesex County, New Jersey.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign urges New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to “make pedestrian safety a policy and investment priority.”
